New Director

New Director

You know, it is too early to tell, etc etc....but the one thing that sort of
bothers me is the good/bad of the new syntax. Sure, it'll be easier for
others, new to Director to adapt, but that also means more people clamoring
for gigs I could get...ok, so more people means more Director development,
but what about concentrating on other things that Director could be as well?
Sure, Lingo needs to be a 'real' language (hell, trying to learn Obj-C right
now and I realize how easy I have it).

There's just things, in my mind, that I'd like to see much more in director:
- better sound support  -- either talk to Headspace and bargain with them to
put Beatnik within director since it was supposed to be open sourced, and
then shelved -- or build something that allows me to add asio or core audio
support. Since I'm betting a lot of people still use 'legacy' director for
stuff like museum installations and the like, I'd like to be able to deal
directly with audio cards.

- more access to media creation: since this was really using Quicktime back
in the day it still seems dopey to me that we can't really create Quicktime
files or do audio/video mixing/creation on the fly since it's been built
into quicktime for so long. Even the newcomer on the block - Realbasic - can
do this out of the box, as well as access to cameras/scanners/ etc. Sure
maybe we can hack something using Flash Comm, but if Director is the 'big
brother' then it should do it out of the box.

What if Director became an mpeg4 creation tool as well? Taking flash assets,
media assets, sound, dynamic urls, blah blah blah and you could choose to
compile to a projector or mpg4 file?   A cross platform mpeg4 creator?
Wouldn't it be the first?

I've always thought of Director and Flash as siblings, where Flash was
younger, a little stupider...hell Flash 3 was Director's retarded
brother...but now I'm afraid that Director's becoming that sad older guy
that's gained a bunch of weight, has greying hair, still wears band t-shirts
and wonders why the ladies don't look at him anymore.

Oh shit. That's me.
