I think this is pretty much the crux of the issue..

Obviously not everything can be easily back ported, and I don't really
expect Cocoa changes or in kernel code to be.. But sooo so much of
this stuff COULD easily be updated across all 10.x versions and would
really make life much easier for everyone!

Even if the older version patches came with a warning like "Apple does
not provide support for this update, install at own risk" or some such..
