Back Hi all,
You may think this is completely off-topic, or ... ?
The last week, I had the flu. This disease makes one much more sensitive to small things. There are many applications I suddenly couldn't stand using.. Especially games. I noticed that I couldn't accept the following:
1: Games which flickers (that is erasing the screen, so you can see the blank screen, then filling it with sprites) 2: Games that does not use VBL
(In other words: A smooth animation is a must) 3: 3D games (what a shame)
4: Blinking web-pages 5: Games that do not respond correctly to controls.
...From real-life: 1: Blinking lights from machines that drive by on the street (they blink yellow usually); eg. the same kind of blinking that police cars have on them [I want to move!]. 2: Noisy fireworks right outside my window [I want to move!!].
...Back to the software. If you want to improve your games, try and find beta-testers, who got the flu, or are sick in a similar way. I'm sure it'll improve the quality of your game, and then again, the interest for your game. Even though Chopper 1.0 is missing VBL code, this was the game I could play for the longest time.
Now, I'm not saying that you should try and get the flu before you write a game, please don't, because you will have no energy for writing games. ;)
However, I know that there are certain things to avoid in computer applications, such as blinking; especially at around 9Hz frequencies. You can make people black out, so please be aware of this. People who have epilepsy would also be very sensitive to these things, so I'm convinced that these people can be of great benefit to you as well.
I hope everyone but me is well, and that I get rid of this thing soon...
