Back Hey all.
I've been having a dig around, trying to find a solution to the problems with the Flash 6 Xtra not running with earlier builds of the shockwave plugin and the fact that you cant update the plugin itself to a more recent build without uninstalling. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the problem lies with "SwDir.dll" (located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Director), registered as the ActiveX component used to embed shockwave content on IE. For all builds above 102, the version number of swdir is stuck at 102, meaning that it always thinks that it is up-to-date. So if you need to get the player to update by setting the version number in the cabs to say #version=8,5,1,106 you will end up with an infinite loop. I think that if they were to update this build number on the version of "SwDir.dll" downloaded by the shockwave installer at "http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/director/sw.cab"
As a workaround, I tried building a couple of pages to force a one-off update
http://www.randommedia.co.uk/users/simon/swupdate/system_test.htm
The idea is to get shockwave test the version number and if below a threshold, to get the browser to go to an html page with a tiny shockwave movie, with #version=8,5,1,106. This would force it to update and then in the movie itself, once updated, get it to go to the original version test page again, where it would pass no problem.
This would work fine in theory, except that when downloaded, it spawns the update page in a new window, rather than loading over the giant "shockwave loading" window. In the new window, it of course loads the html page that forces an update, so infite install loop time again. Any ideas as to how to get the movie to load in its own window rather than a spawn?
