(off topic) consoles and TV web gaming?

Hello All,
I know this is a bit off topic but I recently had a discussion about
interactive TV, which isn't very interactive (e.g. "to play a quiz press
the red button now")

I heard this works by having a bunch of 'channels' which the game/quiz
flicks between for each response and a very small computer (or some kind of
processor) in the cable/digi-box which totals up a high-score for these
quizzes and sends it back to the broadcaster. The service is used to
promote things, or do market research, or as some very limited educational
tool.

Has anyone done interactive TV games? what's the latest? I heard Sony was
looking to combine Playstation with a Digital TV receiver - has anyone else
heard this?

James
